SHUR-LINE & Shannon Kaye Consumer Tips:
“To tape or not to tape- that is the question!”
Inspired to repaint your walls, but dread taping the baseboards and trim? Try these quick tips for when to tape, how to tape, and when you can skip it.
• When to tape –Tape around detailed moldings and complex architecture, especially if you have older walls with ripples and waves of unevenness created by multiple layers of paint or wallpaper. Cutting in with a brush or cutting tool can be frustrating and messy with walls and trim in disrepair. Taping creates a new, clean line that fools the eye into thinking the trim and walls are once again straight and even. For architecture without molding, taping ensures a clean line between walls and ceilings. And to avoid a mess, tape narrow spaces, such as those between a door or window trim and an adjacent wall.
• How to tape – Pull a foot long lead of tape from your roll and anchor it on the baseboard with a pointer finger. With the other hand, guide the roll of tape down to the baseboard, keeping it close to the wall and just above the trim. Move your pointer finger about 6-10 inches away from the anchor and press down, then firmly slide your finger back towards the anchor. Pull a bit more lead from the tape, and repeat the steps, moving along the baseboard towards the roll of tape. Using the roll as a guide helps keep the tape close to your target while your pointer finger places it precisely where you want it. In the corners, carefully use a utility knife or the SHUR-LINE Premium Multi-Tool to press and tear the tape at an angle, creating a perfectly mitered end. Follow these same steps for all your trim to keep your edges looking crisp.
• When to skip it! – If your walls are in relatively good repair and your project is rather large, try SHUR-LINE’s Edge Like A Pro™ for faster edging along crown molding, baseboards, and window and door trim. With a steady hand, you can also paint edges with a 2” angle brush. Try SHUR-LINE brushes with Teflon® Surface Protector, which are designed to release the paint more easily onto the wall than regular brushes, providing quicker and better coverage.
